THE NEW POST-OLYMPICS CHINA

   THE  NEW  ‘POST–OLYMPIC’  CHINA

China must be commended for producing an Olympics

that demonstrated global excellence and showcased a

remarkable 5000 year history.  Here are my thoughts

on China in the aftermath of this wonderful Olympics.

 Tom Faranda, Speaker & Consultant

  Global Business, China and India

Named  by  “Meetings & Conventions Magazine”

as 'one of the most exciting speakers in America.'

CHINA - OLYMPIC GOALS:

1.    Showcase the ‘new China” as a world leader

2.    Reduce China’s national inferiority complex

3.    Improve ‘outsiders’ perceptions of China

4.    Increase business investment in China

5.    Increase tourism and travel to China

CHINA – OLYMPIC SUCCESSES:

1.  CHINA – OLYMPIC  SUCCESS

   Medals:   USA-110 and CHINA-100

       GOLD      :   China- 51,    USA      - 36

       SILVER   :   USA - 38,    China     - 21

       BRONZE :   USA - 36,    China     - 28

2.   Excellent new infrastructure.

BILLIONS of dollars well spent, including

  a new state-of-the-art airport terminal,

new fast rail service into the city,

two new subway lines, new ring roads, elegant

facilities including the Bird’s Nest Stadium(the

largest steel structure in the world)  and the Water

Cube swimming facility.  An outstanding job.

3. English speaking lessons and

   courtesy training for Chinese People

This training was impressive and effective.

4. Outstanding Artistic and Entertainment

   opening and closing ceremonies.

$300 million worth of skill, art and beauty –

not only the best in Olympic history so far

but a new Olympic bench mark.

 5. Showcasing China’s inventions

of their 5000 years of history -

                from inventing  gunpowder, printing and

the Great Wall to modern technology.

Who will ever forget the fireworks,

the dancers on the huge LED and other

     dazzling things......beyond remarkable.

CHINA - OLYMPIC FAILURES:

1.Travel and tourism to China will be enhanced

but NOT to the extent is should have been

after the Olympics. The government-mandated news

coverage was so restricted it did not create any real

PASSION to visit China. It created interest but not

Passion. China failed in this regard by not opening

up the country enough to showcase its great beauty.

Compare this to the TOUR de FRANCE where

the news and photo coverage of the country and

the athletes drives enormous tourism to France.

2. China did not improve ‘outsiders’ perceptions of China.

If anything, they solidified the views that the Chinese

Government is a controlling totalitarian state.

CHINA – POSITIVE CONSEQUENCES:

1.    Gained ‘face’ in the world for their excellence in

    artistic and athletic performances, organization,

engineering and their incredible facilities.

2.    Improved the world’s view of Chinese people

but not of the Chinese government. This is a

shame as China’s government has accomplished

a great deal of good for China in a short time.

CHINA – NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES:

1.    Loss of ‘face’ in the world for their dishonest

    deeds—

including three major incidents and others that

show the ‘true’ China behind the face of China:

ONE     : Substituting lovely Lin Miaoke, lip-syncing

while the Chinese ‘Idol’ winner, 7-year old

Yang Piyi actually sang the opening song.

This was a last minute decision by one member

of the Chinese Politburo, demonstrating their

power and total control of China.

TWO    :  Illegally using UNDERAGE (but wonderful)

Chinese female gymnasts. Then, claiming it

was all ‘an error due to bad paperwork’ and

that the China Olympic Committee had

vetted all ages based on China issued

                passport documents and other excuses.

THREE: Sentencing two infirm women in their late 70’s

to one year in a prison labor camp for daring to

request permission to protest the government’s

insufficient compensation for their home, which

               was seized for redevelopment.

                           NOTE:  THEY DID NOT PROTEST.

They simply asked for permission to protest.

And, they did so in the proper way that the

Chinese government told them to do this.

2.    Loss of Chinese government credibility due to the

          lack of journalistic freedom—limiting exactly

what global journalists could see, report on and

photograph as well police arrests of peaceful

          protesters and reporters.

IOC President, Jacques Rogge, assured everyone

that The Games would spur China toward greater

openness.  He was correct.  The REAL China

showed itself well in its negative acts as well

     as in its positive acts.

FINAL CHINA THOUGHTS

       by Tom Faranda

China is an incredible story of success–it is a

‘man-made’economic miracle that deserves

global recognition. The Chinese government

has done a remarkable job of creating and

maintaining this miracle.  In the near future,

China will experience an economic meltdown

but will recover and continue to grow and be

a major force in the world.  China is a master of

‘socialistic capitalism’ and it will adapt and grow

as a global economic force. China will develop

human rights and  other ‘western values’ over the

next ten years.  This was best said by

Lee Kuan Yew, Minister Mentor of Singapore:

“China’s leaders realize that to improve its

international standing, China must move toward

international norms of governance and public behavior.”

                      I agree with Mr. Lee,

the man responsible for the miracle of Singapore.
